With the first month of the 2010 San Diego Adult Baseball League Summer Season, our ninth consecutive, in the books (132 teams; 131 men / 1 women; 13 divisions), the women of the Bandits Baseball Club, San Diego squad, have shown improvement in both their defensive and offensive skills. The squad's defense has been tightened up with the improved play of several continuing veterans, the changing of positions, the addition of new players, and, the return of veteran players from previous seasons.
Additionally, the long hours of work by Atkins, Cosgriff-Hernández, Strohl, Walker, and Villicanabedolla have begun to show improvement in, and expansion of, the pitching staff. Meghan-Tómasita Cosgriff-Hernández has improved her 'Closer' role by sharpening her pitches and placement (ERA 0.00 / WHIP 1.67 / S:B 2.14). Sarah Strohl's 'Late-Relief' work has developed a dependable performance and progress in control, and, velocity (#1 in 'K's / WHIP 3.75 / S:B 1.66). Carin Elliott has continued to maintain her control (WHIP 2.00 / ERA 4.50). Kelly Deutsch has demonstrated an improved stamina while maintaining her control (WHIP 3.00). Newcomer Katie Walker's 'Short-relief' work has been improving (WHIP 3.00), ERA 4.50). Eva Vadasy (WHIP 3.50), coming back from a late Fall Season injury, continues in her effort to return to her earlier form. Veteran Danielle Villicanabedolla has just returned to mound work, has not lost velocity, and, has improved her pitch placement (WHIP 3.00). Veteran Ashley Atkins has shown very good velocity and sharp control progress in her transition to mound work.
Other improvements include Michelle Betti's move from the outfield to 2B, establishing herself as one of the team leaders on the field, as part of a smooth double-play combo, a dangerous batter with a .539 OB%, and as the #1 run scorer. Cosgriff-Hernández (.800 OB% /#1 .800 BAv / #1 RBI) and Strohl (.714 OB% / #2 .500 BAv / #2 Runs) continue to lead the Bandits in their assault on opposing pitchers. Veteran Liv Klemetsaune has returned to the U.S. and made the move to 3B, while producing a solid .425 OB% and a .333 BAv. Solid centerfielder Waker has produced a .539 OB% while moving into a three-way tie with Strohl and Katie González (#1 .818 OB%) as a run-scorer, behind Betti. Former Rockford Peaches Star Dies
May 17, 2010
Rockford, IL
Story By Scott Leber
Ask just about anyone who saw Dorothy Kamenshek play, they'll tell you she was
not only the best player on the Rockford Peaches. She was also the best player
in the entire All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
Kamenshek died Monday at the age of 84.
Kamenshek played for the Peaches from 1943-1952. She
played first base and she batted leadoff. Seven times she was named a AAGPL
All-Star. Twice she led the league in batting average. She retired as the
league's all-time leader in batting average. In 1946 she stole 109 bases. She
was the Pete Rose of women's baseball years before Pete Rose arrived in Major
League Baseball.
"The people that went and watched the Peaches would say
she was the best first baseman in the league," said former Rockford Peach
Barbara Thompson to WTVO. "I know somebody had said she would have played for
any man's hardball team. And she enjoyed the game. She was good to the young
players."
"She was the best there was," said former teammate Helen
Waddell Wyatt. "There was nobody that would play first base any better than she
could. No man or woman. She worked at it. Every day she practiced fielding in
her hotel room and her bed room. She tried everything she could to be a better
ball player."
Kamenshek was a native of Cincinnati. She lived in California after her playing career ended.

Solid All Star Showings
June 3, 2009
La Mesa, CA
We were represented well in the SDABL
38+A Div. All-Star Game on Wednesday night, 3 June 2009, at Helix High
School.
In a surprise managing move, Sarah Strohl and Meghan-Tómasita Cosgriff-Hernández
formed the Starting-Battery and went for 3 full innings.
At the plate, Strohl managed a walk in 3 appearances; 'flew' around the
base paths from 1st to 3rd on a following single, then scored on a single.
Strohl also played 2 innings in the outfield, making a putout, and,
hitting her cut-offs.
At the plate Cosgriff-Hernández got on base 2 times (beating out throws
that denied 2 double-plays) in 3 At Bats, stole 2nd, and scored on a
pass ball.
Cosgriff-Hernández also played 3 innings at 2nd Base, and participated
in a 6 - 4 - 3. Double Play.
It was a good All-Star Game showing for the Bandits Baseball Club.
Congratulations Sarah Strohl, and, Meghan-Tómasita Cosgriff-Hernández!

October 5, 2008
Tucson, AZ
After three days of competitive baseball, the Bandits Baseball Club finished in seventh place at the Roy Hobbs Women's National Championship Baseball Tournament in Tucson, AZ.
On Thursday, the Club faced the Washington Stars in a rematch from April of 2007. After jumping out to an early commanding lead, the Bandits let the lead slip away late in the game. The Club fought back, and threatened to tie the game in their last at bat, but lost by two runs.
In the second match-up on Thursday, the Bandits again jumped out to an early lead against the All-Stars (D.C. Thunder) from the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area league (Eastern Women's Baseball Conference). A critical two out, base clearing double for the Thunder brought them right back into the game. Even though the Bandits found themselves down, they were not out. Again late in the game the Bandits rallied and loaded the bases, down by two with one out. Poor planning of game times led to this game being delayed and had to be finished in the early morning on Friday in the Stadium. The Thunder and the Bandits were given 30 minutes to battle it out; and battle they did. The Bandits were up for the challenge and rolled into the Stadium to "finish what they started". They quickly scored two runs to tie the game but then lost the lead in the last inning. The 'Thunder' won the barn-burner 10-9.
The Club came back to the Stadium in the afternoon to face the All-Stars from the Detroit, Toronto and Chicago area leagues, the 'Great Lakes Tide'. Wearing the Bandits Baseball Club classic 'all-whites', the Club ran into pitching problems as the starters had to be quickly pulled. The 'Tides' jumped out to an early nine run lead. But the character, fortitude and precise play of the Bandits players helped them to chip away at the 'Tides' lead. Scoring runs in bunches and taking each pitch "one pitch at a time", the Bandits found themselves in the lead late in the game and "closed the deal" to seal the win on a spectacular catch in center field. The Bandits came away with the win, 11 to 10.
The late afternoon game again was short on time, and the Bandits fell behind a talented Chicago Women's Baseball League All-Star tournament squad, the 'Chicago Gems', early. The lead could not be overcome, especially given the lack of daylight.
On Saturday, in the quarter-finals game, the Bandits were matched against the number one seed, New England Red Sox. After poor pitching, defensive play and tough winds, that played havoc on fly balls, the Club found itself behind 11-0. The Bandits rallied defensively and held the Red Sox to two runs for three innings. The Bandits then rallied in their last at bat for two runs falling to the Red Sox 13-2. This was an improved showing against a team that has won the Roy Hobbs National Championships Tournament for five consecutive years!
All said and done, the Bandits played excellent ball and competed in 3 of the 5 games. Improved defensive play, clutch hitting, sound base running , and most importantly, an improved pitching staff, made the Club a formidable force to contend with (31 runs in 5 games). Above all else the Club did it with character, fought hard, and did it with a smile. The Club returns to San Diego, heads held high with a sense of accomplishment, healthy, and looking forward to even more baseball in SDABL.
